Overview of the Consultation Process

Areas that require consultation

Projects that require consultation

  • New construction, additions, remodeling, and large-scale repairs of buildings
  • Changes to façade elements or signage (including usage changes for wall advertisements or rooftop signs)
  • Any projects that affect the exterior appearance of a building

(Note: Even if a project is not subject to formal administrative procedures, consultation with the Design Council is required.) Large-scale replacements of wall or rooftop signage and exterior renewals, which are not covered by the Urban Development Guidelines of Chuo Ward, are also subject to consultation. Please feel free to contact us if you have any inquiries.

Consultation Process

1. Complete the “Ginza Design Consultation Format” with an overview of your project and send it via email.

A sample format is available online.

2. You will receive a confirmation of receipt within one week.

(At that time, you may be asked to submit additional detailed materials or to attend a direct consultation.)

Note: We could ask for further information and also ask you to come to meet us for direct consultation. Contact would be made via the telephone or email address provided on the form. If your project timeline is tight, please indicate your schedule initially.

3. The submitted materials will be reviewed by the Design Council.

In case project is deemed appropriate in order to maintain the character of Ginza:
A report will be submitted to Chuo Ward.

If further consultation is necessary:
Feedback and questions from the Design Council will be provided.

We will continue discussions with the goal of achieving a plan that preserves the unique identity of Ginza while satisfying all parties involved.

Required Documents

Before starting a consultation, please complete the Ginza Design Consultation Format outlining your project details. This format is also distributed by the Regional Planning Division at Chuo Ward. Once completed, please send the form via email.

Guidelines for Submitting the Format

  • Include detailed materials such as drawings and renderings along with the form.
  • Fax submissions are not accepted.
  • Email attachments should be no larger than 2 MB; if the file size is larger, please use an online storage service.
  • Acceptable file formats are PDF or JPG.

Report

After the consultation process is completed (for details on the process, please refer to the relevant consultation guidelines), the Ginza Design Council submits a report to the Urban Development Division of Chuo Ward.
